What Is a Root Canal?
Roots canals entail the removal of the pulp of a tooth, which is a thin thread of tissue that is located in the tooth’s center. After the pulp is removed, the area is cleaned and filled. With the removal of the pulp, the tooth can be saved and will not need to be extracted.
When Is a Root Canal Procedure Advised?
When a tooth has decay that has travelled into the nerve or if a tooth has experienced trauma or fracture, root canal therapy may be necessary to help in restoring that tooth.
What Is Involved in Root Canal Therapy?
After listening to a patient’s description of their symptoms, we take x-rays and perform other tests on the tooth to confirm our diagnosis and gear our treatment toward correcting the problem. Root canal therapy involves removal of the damaged nerve from a tooth and replacing it with an inert material.
The patient is first given anesthesia to ensure their comfort during the procedure. A small opening is made in the tooth to access the nerve system (pulp). The pulp is then removed from the canal in the root, and the canal is thoroughly cleaned. Next the canal is filled with a safe, inert material. A temporary filling material is then placed to close the small access opening that was made. The patient is then instructed to make an appointment in approximately a week.
At the second appointment, the temporary filling material is removed and replaced with a harder material to help support a crown to cover the tooth. Typically a crown is needed to protect the remaining tooth structure from further damage or trauma.
How Long Does a Root Canal Last?
With continual care, a restoration such as a root canal can last a patient’s lifetime.
